GC: Sure, but to get to the point where you can complete Contra III in 30 minutes takes many hours of practice. That said, I hope that those players for whom these games will be entirely new will be able to appreciate why people of my age still hold them (and those on other consoles of the time) in such high regard and how they form part of the journey of where we are today. One of my favourite games from then, Contra III: The Alien Wars, takes barely 30 minutes to complete when you’ve practiced enough. This was the last era where top-tier games could be made by a couple of dozen people so plenty of companies were happy to publish any old rubbish if they saw a gap in the release schedules (Ocean were infamous for this).Ī lot of games were deceptively short too – a holdover from the 8-bit days – they only felt longer because you had to play through several times to get to the end. And that’s disregarding games that would have licensing issues, such as SimCity and Unirally.īut taking off the rose-tinted glasses there was without doubt a higher proportion of awful to good games than today. Off the top of my head I’d have loved to have seen Chrono Trigger, ActRaiser, Terranigma, Smash Tennis, International Superstar Soccer, and Goeman: Legend Of The Mystical Ninja to name just a few. I reckon Nintendo could release a SNES Classic 2 or 3 and still not completely satisfy everyone. From my own and others’ memories of the time it felt like there was an endless stream of great games released. Whilst I wait for things to calm down it got me reminiscing about the 16-bit era. To the point where various retailer websites have crashed with the server load. In typical Nintendo fashion the SNES Classic Mini has led to a wave of excitement, followed by worry over whether people will actually be able to buy one.
